B.F.A. Program

The curriculum for undergraduate students of the Department of Traditional Music aims to breed the spirit of versatility associated with traditional musicians while simultaneously coordinating this with modern and professional musical educational training. The Department offers a four-year curriculum with majors of Chhin (Qin), Phi-pha (Pipa), Lâm-koán (Nanguan), Pak-koán (Beiguan) and Music Theory. Students learn those instrumental techniques associated with their majors as well as theories and other related instruments or styles. In order to achieve an integration of performances and academic work, all students are required to study courses about traditional music, history and theory. In addition, Asian music, western music history and theory-related courses are also required to broadening the vision of students with traditional and international points of view.

Phi-pha: Phi-pha, Music of Lâm-koán

M.A. and M.F. A. Programs

The Master’s Program of the Department of Traditional Music offers two aspects: performance and theory. The theory section covers Music Theory and Traditional Theatre while the performance section offers majors in Chhin, Phi-pha, Lâm-koán, and Pak-koáns. The program focuses on traditional music cultures of Taiwan. It features in-depth study and training about traditional music and culture and is supplemented with interdisciplinary courses in order to foster teachers, professional performers and researchers with modern and international vision.

Requirements for individual majors
Performance: Major, Independent Study, Graduation Recital.

Music Theory: Musicology-Research and Methodology, Theories and Practices of Fieldwork, Anthropology of Music, Study in Taiwanese Theatre, Study in Traditional Theatre, Study in Play Reading, Topic Studies in World Intangible Cultural Heritages, (must select at least three courses from the above courses) Independent Study, Thesis.
